There’s More to Giving Than We Think

By DonationResource Dharma Talk
Generosity (dāna) is beyond giving tangible offerings. It’s the foundation of the Buddhist path to liberate us from feelings of separateness and alienation, and is the first of the ten paramis. During times of difficulty, practicing generosity can help us open our hearts and capacity to embrace others with compassion and love and to heal collectively with others who are suffering. On this day, we will have an opportunity to reflect on how giving to others can be a source of well-being for ourselves and others.

The ten paramis in the Theravāda tradition are a way of conceptualizing the interdependent qualities of a flourishing human life. (1) generosity (dāna), (2) morality (sīla), (3) renunciation (nekhamma), (4) insight (pañña), (5) energy (viriya), (6) patience (khanti), (7) truthfulness (sacca), (8) resolution (adhiṭṭhāna), (9) loving-kindness (metta), and (10) equanimity (upekkhā).
