Each season our Guiding Teacher Jokai Blackwell Roshi addresses a letter to the Sangha. Highlighting our recent accomplishments in the midst of events affecting the wider community, these messages challenge us to open our hearts to the world at large. In line with Jokai’s ongoing instruction and support of our teachers, these letters seek to strengthen connections among our local community of Dharma practitioners, clarify our ethical commitment, and help to guide the unfolding vision for Long Beach Meditation as we go forward together.
Building Community Together
Long Beach Meditation seeks to support our Sangha members in waking up to the fundamental unity of all within the cosmos, the profound and subtle awareness of what the great modern Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, would often describe as “inter-being.” This awakening provides the true ground for community, as our Guiding Teacher, Jokai Blackwell has so clearly articulated: “We are each a rare and valuable happening, a living process, not separate from, but always connected with one another and our world. To realize and actualize these connections, for the benefit of all, is our great work and calling.” Here you will find avenues to deepen practice, engage with others, and make a meaningful difference in yourself and to those around you. Together we are on this journey to cultivate peace and well being for the benefit of all.

Practicing with Sangha
With our experienced teachers of different backgrounds and Buddhist traditions, Long Beach Meditation is a truly diverse and unique sangha. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve as a nonprofit meditation center for the city of Long Beach, CA, and surrounding areas since 1993.
Our Meditation Center
Throughout our over thirty-year history, Long Beach Meditation has continued to refine a basic commitment to reflect the fundamental teachings at the heart of the Buddhist tradition, provide expert instruction and ongoing support for the practice of meditation, and apply the wisdom of the Dharma with clarity and skillful means in all our programs. We believe this commitment is reflected in our mission, our values, and the dedication and experience of our unique community of Dharma practitioners.
