Dear Friends,
As the season moves into midsummer, following the longest day of the year, our collective practice continues. It feels important to acknowledge that the recent fourth of July holiday or Independence Day, is experienced differently by many. In the Zen school, a deeper consideration of the original meaning or implication of the word Independence naturally supports our inquiry into Self nature. This exploration illuminates our responsibility to ourselves and to one another, revealing our shared life as the obvious fact, our common root. As these challenging times ceaselessly unfold, let us hold fast to our core principles. Ultimately, no institution or singular person can be depended upon. Ultimately, the values we hold dear must be practiced and actualized through rigorous discernment and right action no matter the conditions. All that appears in form is temporary in nature. The unconstructed dharma is always our refuge. As we walk the walk, we can never be separated from the source which grounds, sustains, and strengthens us.
I am delighted to announce the recent launch of our new website. It has been a long time in the making! Many kind and industrious hands and hearts made significant contributions to the project. We are grateful and inspired. I would like to express special thanks to Kisen Fredella and Kaletis Manfredi for their devotion to this undertaking. Let us know what you think! The site is a wonderful resource. It highlights who we are at Long Beach Meditation (LBM), beautifully articulating our diverse and joyful offering with special emphasis upon dharma practice and community connection.
On the new site, we have made updates to LBM’s membership page including several key adjustments pertaining to categories and fees. Later this year we will be launching a membership drive explaining the new tiers and benefits in greater detail. If you are a current contributing member of LBM, no action is required to continue your membership. Your regular monthly contribution will continue, and we thank you for your ongoing support. We will warmly welcome new members to join us in accord with the newly defined levels detailed on the website.
As we move forward together, I would like to offer the following dedication, drawn from our varied dharma traditions, which I hope encapsulates the warm, welcoming, and generous spirit of our Sangha.
Dedication of Merit
We dedicate the merits of our practice to everyone gathered here, to our families, our community, and to all beings throughout the Dharma worlds.
May the light of wisdom dispel darkness and awaken compassion.
Let all karma be released, and the natural mind bloom in eternal spring.
May we see clearly into the nature of reality and live each moment with awareness.
Let us awaken together and walk the Way with love and humility.
May all beings be happy and safe from harm.
May all beings be healthy in body and mind.
May all beings be peaceful and free from suffering.
I look forward to seeing you again soon, online or in-person. May everyone enjoy good health and sincere practice as we continue onwards.
As always, I welcome you to reach out to me directly at: jokai@longbeachmeditation.org.
Bows,
Jokai
