About Us

Throughout our thirty-year history, Long Beach Meditation has continued to refine a basic commitment to reflect the fundamental teachings at the heart of the Buddhist tradition, provide expert instruction and ongoing support for the practice of meditation, and apply the wisdom of the Dharma with clarity and skillful means in all our programs. We believe this commitment is reflected in our mission, our values, and the dedication and experience of our unique community of Dharma practitioners.

Our Vision

We will actualize and maintain the strength and depth of the contemplative teachings that inform and inspire our meditation classes, events, and programs. We will provide a supportive container for the practice of meditation and mindful awareness, throughout the local community, and to our online global village.

We will work to find new ways to respond to our increasingly challenging world with empathy and respect, improving opportunities for social connection, increased access, open communication, and compassionate support. We are dedicated to honoring and integrating teachings from both secular and non-secular spiritual traditions to broaden our reach for the benefit of all people.

Our Values

As the Buddha instructed in his teaching, the Dighanaka Sutta, “Refrain from what is unwholesome, do what is wholesome, and purify the mind: This is the teaching of all Buddhas”.

We Are Present
We practice meditation in order to realize and embody the teachings of Buddhism in all interactions, and in our engagement with the world.
We Are Inclusive
We welcome all those interested in meditation and strive to create an actively engaged and supportive community.
We Are Diverse
Our board, teachers, members, and volunteers actively work to reflect the diversity of our multicultural community, varied socioeconomic backgrounds, gender and sexual diversity, and unique points of view.
We Are Self-Sustaining
Our classes and programs are priced affordably, or by donation with no obligation, and are made available to all. We rely on the generosity of our members and donors for funding to make classes and programs available to those who are unable to pay.
We Are Community-Oriented
Our impact reaches beyond our offered meditation programs through community engagement strategies and volunteerism, in an effort to improve our world.

Origins of Long Beach Meditation

Long Beach Meditation was founded in 1993 and is the longest serving nondenominational meditation center in Long Beach. Initially, our founder Dr. Victor Byrd, PhD, organized a small group of people who began meeting together in the Naples area of Long Beach. Throughout the following years this community grew and in 2010, Long Beach Meditation was incorporated as a nonprofit organization and began offering meditation programs in the downtown area of the city of Long Beach.

In the summer of 2017 Long Beach Meditation was invited to our current location in the Belmont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach. We appreciate the beautiful Gabrielson Chapel, an inclusive community space in Bay Shore Church, with stained glass panels the length of the meditation hall. Thanks to their open arms and open hearts, we remain there to this day.

In 2018, Jokai Blackwell Roshi was invited to become our Guiding Teacher. With Jokai Blackwell Roshi at the helm, Long Beach Meditation continues to grow and deepen as a practicing community. We are grateful for the opportunity to fulfill our mission, providing an accessible welcoming space for all to learn and practice meditation and mindful awareness.

Our Logo

Symbol:

An ensō is a symbol of practice and enlightenment found primarily in Japanese Zen Buddhism.

Word:

A Japanese word meaning “circular form,” ensō is often translated into English as “Zen circle.” It represents the endless practice toward perfection whilst allowing the universe to be as it is.

Practice:

The ensō is a simple circle usually painted in black ink on a white paper as a calligraphy practice. According to Zen Buddhist tradition, one should allow one’s body to create freely, drawing the ensō in a single, continuous brushstroke.

Color:

The Long Beach Meditation ensō is rendered in ocean color tones which represent our beginnings as a community on this coastal land, home to the Tongva and other indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
