Dear Friends,
As we draw closer to year’s end, let us take stock of where we find ourselves. Many are in the process of digesting the election results, and, as with all pivotal events, this marks an important time for reflection and careful attention. Together, we will move forward to meet what comes, and as we do, the strength and resolve necessary can be found within the core principles that guide us and offer a sure foundation in times of uncertainty. Right Understanding or Right View, the very first step of the Buddha’s Eightfold Path is a wonderful starting point. Quite simply: See things as they are! Clear Perception. Cutting through competing narratives, distractions, and distortions. How valuable this is for each one of us—the possibility of accepting the world, fundamentally, as it is. This is not a passive position whatsoever. In an absolute sense, the world IS this way, it is not another way, and we live with the manifest results of our shared karmic inheritance. This is our work. This is our great responsibility.
To argue with reality, fundamentally, is to struggle against what is real. From a relative perspective, there is always a great deal to do, and it’s only natural that doubts arise concerning our ability to meet the challenges we face. Still, I believe strongly that as a community of practitioners, we are making a contribution of worth; we are doing our part to assuage suffering in our world. Sincere dharma practice is born of the peace that abides within every single one of us. From this humble yet powerful place, wisdom and compassion emanate. The world is not to be fixed—it is transformed from within.
The late Zen teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized the importance of Right View saying, “Every bit of our understanding, compassion, and peace is useful; it is gold. There are many things we can do today to increase these capacities in ourselves. It is with this kind of peace and stability that you can serve… If you don’t have the qualities of stability, freedom, and peace inside, then no matter what you do, you cannot help the world.” Meditation is the essential practice through which we realize this stability and peace. It is the core of our offering. Indeed, it can be how we help the world.
This year, we have expanded our contributions and opportunities, deepening our connections. Our classes, retreats, and community events have attracted a growing number of participants, including new members who enrich our Sangha. Looking forward, we remain committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive community grounded in respect, authenticity, and truth. We aim to sustain a space where each person’s journey is honored, and where together we share the fruits of our practice broadly and generously. Your support makes this vision a reality, and we are deeply grateful for it.
In this spirit of gratitude, we invite you to join us on December 8th for our annual Sangha Celebration, commemorating the historical Buddha’s enlightenment. Let’s come together in joy to recognize the Buddha’s fundamental insight and how this touches our lives. We’ll share an evening of fun, food, and fellowship, in celebration of our Sangha and the Buddha’s awakening. Your presence is kindly requested. This is an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new friends, and experience the warmth of the LBM community. We hope you will join us to mark this occasion, embracing your vital role in our shared path.
Thank you, once again, for your practice. Together, let us continue to do our very best. I hope to see you soon! As always, I welcome your reaching out to me directly at jokai@longbeachmeditation.org.
Bows,
Jokai
